The Farewell Bell

To hear it's slow tolling to it one may not be near
But the farewell bell for you is the bell you don't hear
The ears of the deceased are closed to all sound
Life's journey does end in a hole in the ground
Where dead people lay peace and silence abound
Though in the graves of the cemetery life forms crawling around
The church belfry from where i am nearly a mile away
But it is tolling a farewell to somebody today
And it's tolling reminds me of my mortality
A similar bell will one day ring for me
On a pleasant sunny morning of twenty one degrees
The sound of it's tolling carrying in the freshening breeze
In the church belfry from where i stand about a mile away
A similar bell will ring for me one day.
