A Champion Athlete

People do seem to age quickly every year past their physical prime
The champion athletes in their twenties eventually lose out to time
In their prime years they were big race winners and the winners take all of the fame
Today the applause is not for them though they are remembered by name
The old bloke who drinks at the local he talks of his days now long past
A champion athlete in his twenties he was one who often ran fast
His medals are even showing time wear and time on him ticking away
He walks with a cane's assistance and the hair on his balding head silver gray
All he has left now are memories of the man he used to be
He was a man in his twenties that to compete the fans flocked to see
Sometimes on his flights of fancy he goes to the past again
Of his many championship big wins the memories only remain
Time that rusts steel and iron on him and his old wife does show
Sometimes in the park on nice evenings together they shuffle on slow.
