Christmas In Ireland

It is cold and wet by the mountains today
In the farmyard sheds cattle are bellowing for silage or hay
People for their Christmas dinner enjoy vegetables and turkey and red meat
And as a dessert cream and plum pudding eat
In their centrally heated living rooms after they dine
They wash their food down with stout , beer and wine
Out of the cold and the rain and the strenghtening breeze
Soughing in the naked branches of the deciduous trees
The sun behind gray clouds is hidden away
It has not been sighted for many a day
Christmas in Ireland is a windy, cold and wet time of year
Where birdsong is a thing that one never does hear
The old hills wear their white hats of December snow
And the waterways bank high in brown flood waters flow.
