That Truth Can Be Stranger Than Fiction

He had grown tired of being hungry and homeless and sleeping rough
In his late teens for many years life had been tougher than tough
And with little hope for better times for him on the way
On his life he had decided for to call it a day

In the park a rope tied top a low branch of a tree
Of his miserable existence would set him free
Since only more hardship of him lay ahead
He had resolved to himself he would be better off dead

Since on life he was one who had given up on hope
It looked like his existence for him would end at the end of a rope
A young man not yet in his physical prime
With rope in a plastic shopping bag he walked to the park in what he thought was to be his last time

It is true about life at times it can be strange
And for the better or the worst in a moment can change
Smoke and flames were billowing from a house nearby
And on the street by her home he saw and heard a traumatized young woman for help cry

My baby is in there please save her to him she did plead
And of any more encouragement he was not in need
He raced into the house in an act that was death defying
Into the smoke filled room where the baby was crying

In a moment of heroism that beggars belief
He handed the child to her overjoyed mother who wept tears of relief
On his walk to what was to be his death a child's life he did save
Where raw courage was needed he proved himself to be truly brave

There is truth in the saying fortune favours the brave
On his way to what was to be his own death a child's life he did save
He is a happily married father of a baby boy today
That truth can be stranger than fiction it does seem this way.
