On Callanan

A native of Cork he died far away
J J Callanan's remains in Lisbon in Portugal lay
A great Irish poet of him one can say
And his memorable poems are living today

He liitle realized his planned short stay in Portugal would be forever more
Never again to see Hibernia's shore
He died in his thirty fourth year in his physical prime
Yet his best poems have lived through the decades of time

The Recluse Of  Inchydoney, The Convict Of Clonmel, Gougane Barra and The Outlaw Of Lough Lene
Poems by Callanan if you read that you will read again
These beautiful poems have in them the genius of a poet
One who remains well worthy of literary note

In Portugal where he went for some health mending sunshine
He breathed his last in eighteen twenty nine
And though the breath that sustains life from his body long gone
His memorable poems today are living on.
