It is not for the love of song that the male songbirds do sing
Since singing with them is mostly a territorial thing
They sing when they have nests and borders to defend
Not for the joy of song or to be anyone's friend
Their songs are not born of love of the mind
But mostly of aggression directed at males of their own kind
To neighbouring males the message is clear
One reason the tree where the nest the female sits in they do not venture near
For they know if they cross the designated border and the male's warning song defy
There well may be bloodshed and feathers will fly
So they heed the warning and keep to their own territory
And on so doing with their neighbour retain harmony
Most experts on birdsong on one thing agree
That it is not about love but defense of territory.
