In Duhallow In Late December

In the fields of the rook and the silver backed crow
Brown flood waters bank high where the Blackwater flow
In late December in Duhallow in weather threatening to snow
Cold wintery wind from the Boggeraghs blow

That sough in the branches of bare deciduous trees
In weather temperatures just above zero degrees
Behind the gray clouds from sight hidden away
The sun will not shine on Duhallow today

The songs of the birds one does never hear
In Duhallow at the end of another old year
In the farmyard sheds in the dawn cold and gray
The hungry cattle are bellowing for silage or hay

Hungry birds in the backyards eating scraps of food and bread
Of them three more long months of wintery weather ahead
In Duhallow in late December the old year getting old
And the loud wind from the Boggeraghs is blowing damp and cold.
