It is quite cold today in the wind driven sleet
Where the bravest would not dare for to walk on bare feet
In the wet rushy fields where the waterways meet
Half an hour west if you walk from the Town of Millstreet
The Boggeraghs wearing their January hats of snow
And the rivers bank high to the Blackwater flow
In the farmyard sheds the cattle are bellowing for silage or hay
The hunger is in them on a cold Winter's day
The song of a bird one never does hear
In January in Ireland such a cold time of year
Many cold and wet nights and days from the first flowers of Spring
When the deciduous trees will grow new leaves and the nesting songbirds will sing
The north winds blowing cold seems that more rain is on the way
The sun it will not shine in Ireland today.
