The Australian magpies or piping shrikes familiar birds of song
Once seen and once heard you never again get them wrong
The beautiful warbling delightful to hear
Of the birds who do sing every day of the year
Black and white territorial birds in small family groups they do live
In their beautiful songs so much pleasure they do give
Their territories with aggression they always defend
And only one of their family group at breeding time loved as a friend
In late Winter and the Spring they often sing at night
How pleasant to hear them warbling in the moonlight
They often sing in unison like a feathered band
These natural songsters of the great southern Land
Distinctive in their appearance and in every way
They are birds one does see and does hear every day.
