By bracken clad hills from here far away
No songbirds are singing on leafless trees today
The coldness of Winter in the December breeze
And the weather temperatures just above zero degrees
On one of the colder months of the far northern year
The cawings of the hungry rooks one often does hear
And in the farmyard sheds for Winter locked away
The cattle are bellowing for silage or hay
On the holly trees the migratory redwing thrushes the red berries eat
To their taste buds they must be quite a tasty treat
After recent heavy rain the waterways bank high flow
In weather that is cold enough for to snow
Today far north even as the migratory bird does fly
The rain clouds are gathering in the gray overcast sky.
