But if you talk of war to old Billy today
Life is all that does matter to you he will say
And you will not find life where dead war heroes lay
Eighty nine on his last birthday in May
The hair on his balding head is silver gray
A divorced great grandfather Liz his long term ex wife
Nowadays has a far younger man in her life
The war medals he won for bravery he put in the rubbish bin
He says that in war so called winners never win
How can there be a winner where so many human lives are lost
The price of any war comes at too high a cost
He wishes what he has experienced in war from his memory would fade
On war memorial day he does not go to the street parade
Where many of his friends died he did survive
And he feels happy and lucky just to be alive
A paid up member of the town's football club
He still enjoys a few beers in the local pub
Somewhat of a character well liked and well known
Quite close to his nineties he lives on his own
