On Hearing A Boobook Owl

On a nearby tree in the still of the night
A boobook owl is calling in the moonlight
Boobook boobook is all it has to say
This bird never seen out in the light of day

The roosting small birds in the bushes and trees near
Awake at the voice of a bird they does fear
With a threat to their lives to them nearby
To a safer roost they quickly does fly

The loud distinctive calls travel far and wide
Of these brown owls of the Australian countryside
If non predatory birds discover where they are roosting at day
They mob them and from their territory force them away

In the still of the night with the moon in the sky
A bird of the bright lamp of day that is shy
Is calling boobook in it's distinctive cry
Out there in the paddock on a tree nearby.
