On the ladder of success you may have climbed far
And your many admirters say of how marvellous you are
Any humility if you ever did have it in you is long dead
The praises of the local impressionable has gone to your head
There are many once were winners who have become losers in every town
From the very top they quickly plummeted down
At least they have learned one lesson from life of them one can say
That they surely do know who their friends are today
All of the town's wealthy class parties you are invited to attend
And everybody it does seem want to become your friend
But you only know who your friends are if you become financially broke
How many of you then will say what a good bloke
You are one of those people that many admire
And of singing your praises none does seem to tire
But you will only know who your friends are
If you cannot afford the price of a second hand car.
