On Hares

Hares unlike rabbits never go to ground
And in large numbers they are not known to abound
They rest in high grass or rushes by day
Mostly rich brown in colour and solitary in their way
For to survive they depend on their agility and speed
For to outrun a fox of such traits they are in need
The hare has great speed as well as dodging skill
And only a very aged or very ill one a predator could hope for to kill
Hares are animals of the countryside
Her two to four young in different locations in long grass the female does hide
She comes to them to be suckled mostly by night and seldom by day
She knows her leverets are quite vulnerable to cats and dogs and foxes and birds of prey
Hares they are quite amazing creatures indeed
To escape from predators they depend on their agility and speed.
