I Am Not One To Ask

I am not one to ask who is or is not a poet
Since i am not one of any literary note
And i am one without a literary degree
So for an answer to your question ask one other than me


And anyway i am one who has always liked rhyme
Which twenty first century critics dismiss as poetry of another time
They are the people paid for their literary criticisms and who in their opinions take pride
And who believe who is or is not a poet is up to them to decide

It is said about poets that they are of the few
But this is an old saying and not anything that is new
It is also said poets are born not made
Though every writer is needed in the wordsmith trade

To your question who is or is not a poet i can only say
Ask one of those who for their literary opinions receive a good pay
For their literary opinions they do get paid well
And they will tell you what is poetry and what is doggerel.
