Whilst to most they are known as yellow tailed black cockatoos
Big dark brown parrots in their ways quite shy
Call out weerloo weerloo as in small flocks they fly
With yellow feathers on either side of face and tail though mostly dark brown
To be different from other parrots their main claim to bird renown
They shred pine cones and crack hakea nuts with their strong bills for their seeds to eat
What is inedible to most birds to them a tasty treat
In a huge cavity on an old growth tree the female bird lay
One to two large eggs of a palish gray
But only one nestling to adulthood survive
In Nature the weak often die for the strong to thrive
Distinctive in their habits and their natural way
They are birds i see often though not every day.
