Known mostly as magpie larks some refer to them as pee wee
Black and white medium sized birds one often hear and see
Their heads always nodding as they walk around
On their search for insects they find on the ground
Magpie larks even adopt backyards as their homeplace
The female than the male has more white on her face
She lays up to eight pale pink spotted eggs in bowl like nest high on fork of tree
That from the ground is never that hard to see
They have a huge range Australia wide
And in pairs or small family groups they do reside
Quite vocal in defense of their territory
They sing as a duet and call out pee wee
Of humans magpie larks are not very shy
They allow you get close to them before they take to the sky
Of the birds of Australia among the better known
Distinct from all others with ways of their own
Familiar to many of them one can say
In paddocks, backyards or town parks one see and hear them every day
They live in pairs or small family groups and are well loved and well known
Dainty black and white birds with ways of their own.
