An Honourable Person

An honourable person was buried today
Of anyone she never had unkind things to say
To her children a good mother and to her late husband a good wife
Kind, caring and compassionate she lived a good life

Her son and her daughter from her lived far away
Partnered with teenage children though she had not seen them for many a day
They wrote to her often and kept in contact with her by phone
And she never seemed lonely though living alone

A member of the Salvation Army she worked tirelessly for the homeless of the town
Yet for her many good deeds she never sought recognition or renown
Those in dire poverty many of the town's poor were at her burial today
Their last respects to her they had come to pay

Honours in life she never wished for at all
And though her name will never be on a memorial wall
Though of her equals as a person not many to name
She lived and she died as a stranger to fame

In her late seventies her last remains are at peace
For all of us from life there is a final release
In life she performed many a good deed
And of more of her sort humanity is in need.
