The Birth Of The May

The magpies are piping in the dawning gray
As if they wish to welcome the birth of the May
The morning is cool under ten degrees
And brown leaves gently fall to the grass from the deciduous trees
The first day of the last month of Autumn and Winter quite near
But May is a pleasant enough time of year
The weather not warm and neither too cool
In the coastal lands between Koroit and Warrnambool
The paddocks brown and dry a month ago are now looking green
And Autumn's colours of Nature beautiful to be seen
Though the water dams remain low and bone dry every drain
The coastal countryside looking the better for the recent rain
On the first day of May of the southern Fall
The weather is pleasant enough overall.
