Of the far away town and the long gone years
A town he had not seen for a six decade time span
Until last year he returned to where his life's journey began
But now of his first hometown he feels differently
As his visit there did not turn out as he thought it would be
There he was a stranger to all he did meet
And sadly he even felt a stranger on his first home street
How the old hometown had changed to him a huge surprise
Time brings with it changes he now realize
In his case reality expectations did betray
He seldom does mention his first hometown today
Ten times a great grand dad Jane his devoted wife
Ten years ago to cancer lost her gift of life
He lives in his two bedroom unit with his black labrador Tim
As a companion he says i am lucky to have him
A stranger on the streets he often walked up and down
Old John will never again see his first hometown
No more tears in his eyes for the what used to be
The past to him now is just a memory.
