The giant tortoises of the Islands of Aldabra and the Galapagos live to be very old
Some up to and beyond two centuries as we have been told
This is twice as long as the longest lived woman or man
Of living time for an air breathing creature this is quite a long span
For a land dwelling reptile this seems such a long time
In their fiftieth year they are in their lives prime
They are heavy reptiles many of them over two hundred pound
Though even in their home islands in large numbers they do not abound
Of so little of them and their ways of i can claim to know
I have seen them in zoos they seem lumbering and slow
Perhaps their slow and easy going ways one of the reasons they live for so long
Those who claim that stress shoretens life are surely not wrong
The giant tortoises of Aldabra and the Galapagos live for a long time
In their fifties they are only in their lives prime.
