In The Nearby Wood

In the nearby wood in the dawning gray
The shrike thrush is whistling to greet the new day
To be a fine songster one of it's claims to fame
The brown and gray bird known as the gray shrike thrush by name
Distinctive inb their appearance and their beautiful song
Birds once seen and once heard one never again should get wrong
In tree hollow or low branch in cup shaped nest of bark and moss the female bird lay
A few palish eggs with brown dots through the gray
In the little wood by the old country town
In Spring i often hear them whistling at dawn and just before and after sundown
Quite distinctive birds with ways of their own
For their beautiful song they are loved and known
In the calm of the dawn so pleasant to hear
A gray shrike thrush whistling on a tree somewhere near.
