Francis Ledwidge

Ireland has lost one of it's great poets Lord Dunsany did say
At news of the death of Francis Ledwidge in a war far away
The Poet of The Blackbird for him an often used name
His memorable poems are his legacy to his enduring fame

To the lovers of lyrical poetry his marvellous poems he did bequeath
This young man from Slane in the midlands of Ireland in the County of Meath
As a poet of life, people, love and Nature of his time one of the best
His poetry has withstood time the greatest test

Francis Ledwidge was a natural original poet his type as ever rare
Referred to by some as the Irish John Clare
Of the English speaking World one of the great young lyrical poets of his time
On his twenty ninth year he died far from home in his physical prime

War at a young age robbed Ireland of a great poet
His name lives today as one worthy of literary note
His early passing from life had his fans in tears
His poems have outlived him by a century of years.
