On The Butter Road

In the times of the horse drawn cart it was the main Kerry to Cork roadway
But from Millstreet to near Cork City it is only fit to drive on today
Where people used to take their butter to Cork City to market to sell
Today it's name of the Butter Road seems to suit well

On the high country by Mushera above Millstreet Town
The narrow Butter Road does wind up and down
By Mushera on down to the flatter countryside
An old road  known to tourists from Countries Worldwide

That it once was a main road happens to be so
In the days of the horse and cart decades ago
Most of the Butter Road closed to public traffic condemned to history
This is all that remains now of the what used to be

In Winter on the Butter Road in inclement weather of frost, fog and snow
Not a safe road to drive on the traffic moves slow
It once was the inspiration of the makers of song, story and rhyme
When it was the main road to Cork City from Kerry going way back in time.
