The Funeral Bell

For millions of people it rings every year
But the bell that tolls for them the dead does not hear
For the one it does toll for from life a farewell
No joy in the ring of the funeral bell
Carrying in the breeze across the morning sky
The pealing of the bell in the chapel nearby
For one whose ears are deaf to all living sound
Who on her or his last drive is cemetery bound
Death is inevitable for us all in truth one can say
And the funeral bell does ring every day
As a reminder to the living that we too will die
That death does not differentiate is not a lie
On a mild and sunny morning birds chirping on the trees
The tolling of the funeral bell is carrying in the breeze.
