When The Flowers Were In Bloom

He left her in May when the flowers were in bloom
In the gardens and parks of the Town of Macroom
In her early twenties near her physical prime
Though this is going back many decades in time

Blue eyes and shoulder length hair that was wavy and brown
She was one of the finest then in Macroom Town
He promised to return for to make her his wife
And she vowed to wait for him the great love of her life

The feelings of love for him in her were deep
But the promise he made to her he did not keep
The letter she waited for from him never came
In his mind she was just a forgotten name

Her once wavy brown hair it is now silver grey
And the man that she married is not with her today
Into her sixth decade some weight she did gain
Few women their youthful beauty do retain

Ten times a grandmother and now on her own
Of how it feels to love deeply of in life she has known
But going back the years this now seems long ago
And time that rusts iron has become her foe.
