A Cold Morning In July

A cold morning in July at least five weeks from the Spring
A white backed magpie on a gum tree his flute like song sing
His familiar warbling so distinctive and clear
His kind they do sing every day of the year
From the overnight frost the grass looking gray
Though by the weather forecast we are in for a nice sunny day
On a cold Winter morning so uplifting to hear
The flute like notes of one of the family of birds who sing every day of the year
In the far southern parts of this vast Land of the south
The Winter mornings can be chilly before the sun shines out
But the song of a magpie in truth one can say
Never fail to bring joy to a cold Winter day
On a cold Winter's morning just above zero degrees
Without any sun and only a slight breeze.
