Goldfinches

Goldfinches i see often though not every day
And seeing them takes me to a place far away
Where i grew to love Nature as a young boy
And learning of her ways today i enjoy
Red around face and over all gold, white and brown
Birds of the countryside and parks of the rural town
Unmistakeable in their appearance and their twittering song
Once seen and once heard you will never again get them wrong
In neat cup nest hidden in hedge of rootlets lined with hair and hay
Four to six brown dotted blue eggs the female bird lay
Introduced by humans from Europe they are the farmers friend
On their liking of thistle seed in pest weed control some help they do lend
These birds i see often though not every day
They always take me to a place far away.
