Common Starlings

These dark purple speckled birds i do see every day
They take me in memory to a place far away
Flying in large flocks in day's fading light
To their roosting trees quite a memorable sight
Their swiftness of flight an anti predator thing their speed
Though not as fast as fliers as swifts and swallows they are quite fast indeed
They are friends of the farmers some are known to say
As they eat harmful insects to the land in the fields every day
In an untidy cup of grass lined with feathers the female bird lay
Four to six blue eggs in Australia they are here for to stay
Introduced from Europe some bird lovers look upon them as a pest
As they compete with small native birds for sites for their nest
To be Nature's survivors one of their claims to bird fame
Common starlings for them is an often used name.
