On Badgers

In most Countries they live in badgers are creaturtes of the countryside
Mostly nocturnal  by day in their steep burrows they sleep, rest and hide
At night they dig for grubs and worms in the fields and on small creatures prey
Grey with white faces of the weasel family they are seldom seen out by day
Badger baiting was a common and cruel sport going back in time
Nowadays outlawed by most governments and considered a crime
I recall reading a poem by the Helpston poet John Clare on badger baiting as a boy
Reading his poems on animals today i even enjoy
Men using packs of dogs to hunt and kill badgers was cruel and inhumane
The poignant feelings in badger the poem today in me remain
It is true that badgers can be affected by T B
But that they spread it to cattle not everyone agree
Quite beautiful creatures of them one can say
That the World better for them living in it today.
