The squashed and bloodied body of an emu dead on the roadway
It is something that one does not see regularly
And that most people would never wish for to see
To say that emus have good road sense would be for to lie
Like marsupials many of them on the roadway every year die
Once plentiful but nowadays becoming rare
Of this many rural Australians are acutely aware
Emus are birds with ways of their own
That the males hatch the eggs and raise the chicks of them this is known
In populated rural places the heavy road traffic on their numbers taking toll
Wildlife deaths on the roadways seem out of control
Emus in the wild state becoming rare in the twenty first century
And a dead emu on the roadway always a sad thing to see.
