He learned from Nature her lessons were free
From a Helpston herdboy to one of literary note
His name lives today as a great Nature poet
As a wordsmith John Clare with words had a way
He learned from Nature something new every day
From the elders of the Village he learned about fauna and flora as a boy
And writing about Nature he surely did enjoy
The poems of John Clare were born of joy and tears
He died in Northampton mental asylum where he had lived for years
Since he breathed his last one hundred and fifty five years in time has gone
Yet he is the only one from his Village whose name does live on
As a person of note in literary history
Though he lived and died in poverty
England's greatest Nature poet many literary experts do say
His legend is living in his poems today.
