The warbling of the Australian magpies so pleasant to hear
Visual and vocal memories of them not hard to retain
Once seen and once heard you will know them again
On nest of sticks lined with dried grass and rags and feathers and hair high on branch of tree
That from the ground is not hard to see
One to six greenish brown dotted eggs the female bird lay
From their breeding territory they chase all other birds away
Called magpies due to their colouring but in reality piping shrike
Quite territorial and bullies other birds them do not like
Among the best known of Australian birds since they live Australia wide
In town parks and gardens and padocks of the countryside
Distinctive in their black and white feathers and their warbling song
Once seen and once heard you will never again get them wrong.
