On Magpie Larks

In cup shaped nest of mud high on branch of tree
The female lay pale pink spotted eggs of five four or three
Medium sized black and white birds known as magpie lark, mudlark or peewee
All over Australia birds one often does hear and see
They live on tiny insects they find on the ground
Their heads seemingly bobbing as they walk around
To be different in behaviour and appearance from other species one of their claims to fame
Not that scared of people they seem almost tame
In parks and paddocks, backyards and gardens they spend their days
And as they call out peewee their wings they do raise
Among the birds of Australia one of the better known
One can say of them they have ways of their own
Often seen and heard in paddocks, backyards and many a town park birds one does see every day
Quite familiar and distinctive of them one can say.
