In Beal Na Blathh The Gap Of Flowers in his home countryside
On August the twenty second nineteen twenty two Michael Collins died
Though not everyone's Irish hero a hero to many one can say
He surely did not deserve to die on such a very cruel way
At least he did not suffer for long death to him did come fast
His tragic death a tragic story of Ireland's tragic past
One of the signatories of the Anglo Irish Treaty of nineteen twenty one
On that sixth day of December when the signing had been done
Ireland's leading revolutionary Michael Collins had been known to say
I have just signed my death warrant here in London today
It can be said of Collins his prophesy for himself came true
But a far better ending in life should have been his due
He did not live to father children and for time to become his foe
He died on the roadway at Beal Na Blath one hundred years ago.
