J J Callanan wrote of Gougane Barra's beauty
Where his Allua of song the River Lee is forever flowing
From it's source in the mountains where the bracken is growing
Of Ireland's poets Callanan was as good as any
It would be fair to say his equals were not many
In Portugal he died as a young man his life a success story
His poems a testament to his honour and glory
His verses a source for pleasure of joy he had the giving
Callanan long deceased but his poems are still living
To proclaim him one of Ireland's great poets there are no shortage of reasons
His poems have outlived him by hundreds of Seasons
The Recluse Of Inchydoney, The Convict Of Clonmel and The Outlaw Of Lough Lene in time have not faded
Twenty first century literary critics by the beauty in his poetry persuaded
That his poems have an originality in them that cannot be outdated
And that for his genius he ought be celebrated.
