Grey on bill and on forehead, grey legs, red eyes and overall mostly dark
One often see them near or on lake in a park
With short dark tails, well rounded and quite sturdy for their size
They often utter loud screeches and are not hard to recognize
That they are Nature's survivors of them none can deny
Eurasian coots is the name is that they are known by
In water reeds on the lake shallows from sight well hidden away
In large cup shaped nest of water weeds and grass five to seven dark dotted umber eggs the female bird lay
Grazing by water or diving for their water insect prey
People walking by lakes in parks see them every day
At nesting time with aggression their territories they defend
And they do not treat other species of water birds or even their own kind as a friend
They have a huge range Australia wide
And in large flocks are often seen by or on lakes in town parks or lakes and dams in the countryside.
