Old Age Can Be A Punishment

We do age so quickly and time becomes our foe
And that old age can be a punishment does happen to be so
Jim a widowed great grandfather in his late eighties is showing the wear of time
A regional athletic champion when in his life's prime
The hair that used to be dark brown on his balding head is now white as snow
And his legs that once did run fast nowadays are walking slow
Ella his wife of sixty years three years ago passed away
And in the grave he will join her in a not too distant day
All he has are memories of the distant past
When he was the town's champion eight hundred metres runner and his legs did run fast
Nowadays he uses a walking frame in the park or on the street
Who would believe that in his prime he was a great athlete
In his two bedroom brick unit he lives on his own
The once champion athlete of far better days has known.
