He Is Not The Man

With lots of gaps in his fading memory
He is not the man that he once used to be
Last May on his birthday he turned eighty three
Among his siblings the only one who left school without a degree

As a drainer and heavy water and sewer pipe layer he earned his pay
A handsome and sturdily built fellow when in his prime going back many a day
The hair on his balding head is silver grey
That time does take care of everyone only true for to say

He was married for a brief while to the great love of his life
But after eight months of marriage his beautiful young wife
Though sadly with a mental illness and heavily pregnant with his child she did decide
That she would end her mental torment in suicide

Not a shadow of the man that he was years ago
Time that ages all life has become his foe
A nice old bloke he is one who is free of guile
The gaps in his mouth shows when he does smile

He does not remember everything in his past
As his gift of memory in him seems to be fading fast
In the home for the aged he will live his last night and day
That time takes care of everyone only true to say.
