Bilbies

Bilbies nicknamed the rabbit eared bandicoot are Australian marsupials that have become rare
Which is the case for many species of wildlife as many of would be aware
Named from an indigenous tribe of northern New South Wales known as the Yuwaalaaray
Not many bilbies left in the Australia of today
Like bandicoots they have long pointed snouts and they dig with their strong claws for insects and slugs on the ground
Years ago in large numbers they used to abound
But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and the introduction of the fox and the cat
Bilbies have become rare and it seems sad to say that
Their numbers in the wild state are nowadays of the few
Like the dwindling numbers of some other wild species and this is not saying what is new
With long ears quite beautiful animals with ways of their own
For their burrowing abilities they are widely known
To try to save them from extinction captive breeding programs are in place
And sad to think that bilbies are a dying race.
