The black tailed native hens that you see today
Tomorrow may be many kilometres away
Since they are nomadic and in one spot never stay
Among the travellers of wetland birds of them one can say
Black bantam sized gallinules of human kind shy
At the sight of an approaching human they run to cover of small trees and bushes by lake or pond nearby
In grass cup nest in heavy cover by water the female bird lay
Five to seven green brown dotted eggs from sight well hidden away
They live on grass and insects they find on the ground
And they do migrate often and in large numbers abound
Just a quick shriek to utter is their only sound
And their black tails are always flicking as they walk around
They are not the sort of birds that one would capture to tame
And black tailed native hens for them seems an apt name.
