Brown bars on grey breast and back and wings of dark brown
To be Australia's largest owls their claim to renown
Their loud hoo hoo calls echoing in the night
Cause nearby sleeping birds to wake and take to flight
Birds that hide on the high trees from the lamp of day
On ringtail and brush tail possums they regularly prey
Rare members of Australia's hawk owl family
The female lay one to two white eggs high in hollow of old tree
In some woods of south east Australia mostly in pairs they reside
On wintery nights their loud calls in the breeze does carry far and wide
That their numbers are on the decline there can be little doubt
To bushfires and destruction of their natural habitat powerful owls are losing out
Australia's largest owls have become quite rare
A fact that environmentalists have become aware.
