You fade by the year past your physical prime
Eventually we all become victims of time
Not the man that he was time has become his foe
The town's greatest athlete many years ago
He only has memories of his glorious past
Nowadays walking slow he no longer moves fast
When out for a walk he seems slow on his feet
Few would believe he was a champion athlete
In his twenties at eight hundred metres he was the Nation's best
And was never found to be wanting when put to the test
But half of a century has gone by since when
That he was admired as a man amongst men
The years on the best of them eventually show
The champion athlete he is now walking slow.
