On Hearing A Southern Boobook Owl

In the nearby wood in the still of the night
A boobook owl is calling in the moonlight
A bird never seen out in the light of day
Mopoke mopoke is all it has to say
One of the grey mottled brown hawk owls of the Australian countryside
Their loud distinct calls on a calm night can be heard far and wide
By their mopoke call once heard you will recognize them again
A familiar voice of the night that with you will remain
Hidden from view in the hollow of an old tree
The female lay white eggs of two or three
On smaller birds and other small life forms they are known to prey
Hidden from view on a leafy tree they rest by day
Birds of the night with ways of their own
To most rural people they are well known.
