Small red eyed black shouldered grey raptors they hover as they fly
Like kites for many minutes hanging in the one spot in the sky
Black shouldered kites for them seems an apt name
As their cousins the nocturnal letter winged kites in appearance much the same
When hovering with dangling legs always scanning the ground
For small life forms such as mice that are moving around
On flat nest of sticks lined with grass or soft material high on the canopy of a tree
The female lay blotched eggs of four or three
They can be aggressive with young to defend
And they do not treat other birds and humans in their territory as a friend
They are birds one sees often though not every day
Like a kite with legs dangling scanning the ground for prey
Quite distinctive from other raptors with ways of their own
To most country people they are quite well known.
