A Memory From The Nineteen Fifties

The National Bard of Scotland his is an enduring fame
In his memorable poems, songs and ballads he made for himself a name
He became Worldwide famous even in his short life span
It can be said of Robert Burns he was an amazing man

I remember as a schoolboy at a horse fair in Millstreet Town
When not yet in my teen years with hair of darkish brown
An old Irish traveller sang Afton water as on his accordion he did play
A memory that with me until death will stay

A grey haired singing traveller his voice melodious and clear
For a twelve years of age boy was a joy to hear
From the pen of Robert Burns from all of those years ago
That today remains with me though time has become my foe

The poems and songs of  Burns have outlived the fading popularity of rhyme
They remain as popular as ever and have stood the test of time
The author of Auld Lang Syne the New Year all time favourite song
Burns may be Scotland's National Bard but to all of humanity his poems and songs belong

At a horse fair in the Duhallow Town of Millstreet in view of Clara's Hill
An old Irish Traveller sung Afton Water the memory with me still
From the late nineteen fifties when i was a boy
Such memories last a lifetime they have their source in joy.
