In the nineteen fifties the Millstreet Athletic Club had many a great athlete
And against Ireland's best they regularly did compete
And were seldom found to be wanting when put to the test
Of the athletic clubs in Duhallow then millstreet were the best
The great Neenan brothers Willie and John D
In track and cross country raced to many a victory
A race to commemorate Willie Neenan in Millstreet annually
The man in athletics who created his own history
Back then Joe Buckley of Cloghoula in the green strip of Millstreet with the best held his own
As quite a good cross country runner he became well known
Where some of the deceased of the Millstreet Parish are at peace he does lay
He was quite a famous sportsman on his day
John Kelleher the pole vaulter good memories of him will remain
One like him may not be seen in Duhallow again
Quite jubilant in victory and gracious in defeat
At pole vaulting back then always the one to beat
Many times Irish high jump champion Cockhill's Pat O Shea
Old timers do still talk about him today
He set Irish records on his leaps to renown
One famed and admired far from Millstreet Town
The great four hundred metres track sprinter Paddy Byrne who who often done Millstreet Proud
A humble man he leaves it to others for to sing his praises loud
For many years a priest in the U S of A
He is living in his Hometown of Millstreet today
Back in the nineteen fifties when i was a boy
The successes of their athletes to the people of Millstreet Town and Parish was a source for joy
But time that ages all life did become their foe
And going back the years this now seems long ago.
