Mary Dempsey

In Drominahilla near Millstreet Town she first saw light of day
And in New York her mortal remains now do lay
As Mary Hickey she was born into life
And as Mary Dempsey she became a mother and wife

Doubtless she had fond memories of the Town of Millstreet
And the green countryside where the waterways meet
In Ireland one of those who did not choose to stay
Good memories die hard as the wise one did say

As a young woman she left Millstreet for the big World out there
Like many she was destined for to grow old elsewhere
In the nineteen fifties and sixties many young people in Ireland did not remain
But Mary's loss to Millstreet became New York's gain

As Mary Hickey in Drominahilla near Millstreet Town her journey in life began
And in New York as Mary Dempsey she lived out her time span
One can only hope that her passing from life for her was a painless release
In her adopted home may her remains rest in peace.
