At The Shannaknock Cross

At the Shannaknock Cross by the Millstreet- Rathmore roadway
No Irish travellers horse drawn vans for to be seen today
They have not parked there since the late nineteen fifties that now seems long ago
And of the children back then time has become the foe

The sharp increase in motorized vehicles to their horse drawn vans brought an end
To old ways as is known time is never a friend
By motorized vehicles from then on the travellers did travel around
Though in twenty first century Ireland in large numbers they do not abound

Their favourite type of horses were pinto mostly white and brown
That they bought and sold at horse fairs in many an Irish town
Even the horse fairs in Ireland today in the few
That most things lose out to time is not saying what is new

By their campfires at night when i was a boy
Listening to their songs and music i used to enjoy
But few things as they were ever seem to stay
A very different Country to live in the Ireland of today

Yes a different Ireland nowadays than the Ireland that used to be
At the Shannaknock Cross Irish Travellers and their horses and vans one does not see
And only the memories now does remain
Of what used to be but will not be again.
