The insects that do live on Nature's decay
Known as slaters or woodlice and of them it would be true to say
That they feel secure when hidden from the light of day
Of their value to Nature few seem to realize
Dark grey they look crawling armadillos of minute size
Though they are friends of Nature as all environmentalists and scientists agree
They are not protected by any government decree
In a heap of wood or under bark of old decaying tree
Hidden from daylight they feel safe as can be
As at hurrying on decay they work tirelessly
Though billions of them die in fires every day
As friends of Nature their part they does play
On breaking down rotting timber they lessen the impact of bushfires on the ground
As Nature's compostors in large numbers they abound.
